USBHOF Class of 2024: Georgena Terry, Contributor to Cycling in General
Georgena Terry has dedicated decades of work to support women in cycling. A victim of childhood polio, she became an avid cyclist in the mid-1970s and found that most bicycle frames designed for men were not ergonomically correct for women. Applying her Mechanical Engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon University, she began designing, building, and selling frames exclusively for women, with dimensions, angles, and components better suited for female cyclists. By 1985, she named her new company Terry Precision Bicycles, the first women-specific cycling company. During the next few decades, Terry introduced women-specific cycling clothing (1991), the Women's Sport Saddle (1992), and Team Terry, a professional women's road racing team with an emphasis on fostering young female cyclists (2001). Today, Georgena continues to design custom bicycles. #cycling #biking #terrybikes #bikehistory #history #bike #terry #womencycling

USBHOF Class of 2025: The Wright Brothers, Contributor to Cycling in General
In 1892, Orville and Wilbur Wright started manufacturing their own custom bicycles as the Wright Cycle Company in Dayton, Ohio. Their top-of-the-line Van Cleve model featured a unique self-lubricating, sealed hub - designed by Orville - which protected the wheel bearings from dirt. Another innovation was left-hand threads on the left pedal so it wouldn't unscrew when pedaling. This design is still seen on bikes today! The brothers did extensive research on human flight. They tested lift equations by mounting a rig on the handlebars of a Van Cleve bicycle to get airflow. They applied their bicycle mechanical experience and self-taught engineering to build and fly the very first heavier-than-air aircraft powered by an engine in December 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The Wright Flyer was built using key bicycle components, like sprockets and chains. #cycling #history #wrightbrothers #aviationhistory #bikes
